If you're like most artists, you've probably been taught the horizon line lesson (probably with a railroad track as a visual) at one time or another–Maybe even in your elementary school art class. As I've taught art over the years, I realized understanding your horizon line is just the start of understanding perspective in your drawing! Eye level perspective is also a crucial element of drawing to understand and it helps build a foundation for creating realistic and visually engaging artwork. Learning to understand and accurately depict eye level perspective, allows artists to convey a sense of depth and three-dimensionality in their drawings.

This skill is particularly vital when depicting scenes from everyday life or creating immersive environments, as it helps artists position objects and elements in a way that mirrors how the human eye perceives them. Without a solid grasp of eye level perspective, your artwork may appear flat and lack the convincing illusion of space, which diminishes the authentic "feel" of your drawing and how believable it is from the realism side.

A solid understanding of perspective enables any artist to experiment with different viewpoints and compositions, which enhances their ability to tell stories or evoke emotions through their art. By manipulating eye level perspective, artists can create dramatic effects, emphasize certain elements, or guide the viewer's attention strategically, while adding depth and narrative impact to their work. In essence, eye level perspective serves as a fundamental skill that empowers artists to bring their creative visions to life with precision and impact.
